The Farm

Star Gazer Farm is a PEI century farm that was originally a dairy farm. In 2010 Jackie and Eric purchased the acreage and converted the property into a horse farm. The 120' long dairy barn now contains horse stalls, a tack room, a feed room, and pens for our chickens. In 2018 we added a new barn which contains two foaling stalls and a run-in shelter for broodmares and foals. In 2022 we purchased an adjacent property with a 50' x 100' warehouse.

There is 80' by 150' outdoor sand riding ring, five paddocks, and two large pastures. All paddocks have board fencing, and pastures fences are made with 3-4 strands of electric wire.

We are within walking distance to the Confederation Trail, Scales Pond Trails, Walls Heritage Road, and only a ten minute drive to some of PEI's most beautiful south shore beaches.

Quality of life for our animals is of top most importance to us. We believe in providing our horses which as much turnout time as possible while also taking into consideration their comfort in regards to severe weather and insects. Ample quality forage and clean water is available 24/7, and we provide all of our horses with a high quality vitamin and mineral mix to promote optimal health and development.

The main focus of our farm is breeding horses for the competitive amateur rider. Our two breeds of choice are Hanoverian and Welsh Ponies/Cobs, but we also have our mares approved for other warmblood registries. We believe strongly in the concept of creating "easy" horses; meaning horses who have both the temperament and intelligence to be a joy to train, but also the athletic ability and conformation to find the physical work they are asked to perform effortless. We have selected only stallions and mare with dual purpose pedigrees to allow future owners of our horses the flexibility to compete in multiple disciplines, and because we believe a truly athletic and well conformed sport horse should be versatile.

Jackie’s equestrian journey started with a toddler’s savings jar and a dream that terrified her non-horsey parents. By 13, that dream became a reality when she brought home Mouse, an unbroken QH gelding. Being a feral 90s child without a mentor or a formal arena, Jackie used the beaches and hayfields of Western Head, Nova Scotia, as her classroom. This trial-by-fire education eventually turned Mouse into a versatile, solid citizen - sparking Jackie’s lifelong commitment to training horses with gentleness, patience, and a sense of humour.

While she began her professional career with a Level 1 Western Coaching Certification, Jackie eventually fell for the precision of Dressage. This led to a 15-year partnership with her mare, Icy Poodles, where the two reached a compromise: Jackie would brave the jumps if Poodle would humour the dressage.

Professionally, Jackie holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from UPEI, and has served the equine industry as a riding instructor, trail guide, trainer, groom, and stable manager. Since 2008, she has worked as a 4-H Specialist for Western PEI. Jackie founded Stargazer Farm in 2005 with her partner, Eric Ford. Her passion has become equine genetics, breeding, and young horse rearing. When she can find free time her other interests are photography, cooking, all areas of academic study, music, literacy, and hiking and swimming with her dogs.

Having started her journey without a mentor, Jackie is deeply passionate about supporting grassroots equestrians, a mission she furthers through her volunteer work with the 4-H PEI Equine Projects Committee.

Eric Ford

Owner/Foal Cuddle Expert/Fixer of the Things

Eric became a horse enthusiast after meeting Jackie, who introduced him to the horse world... whether he wished it or not. ;-) He now has over 26 years of experience working with horses. He is co-owner of Star Gazer Farm where he has several important roles: ring side therapist, foal socialization, blanket mender, builder/fixer of all things, pony spoiler, wheelbarrow wrestler, guy who knows what the "thingy" in the "what-cha-ma-call-it" does, and more!

Eric's true passion is for playing paint ball, and he also enjoys drawing, graphic design, and computer animation. He works for Castle Building Centre and has his own small design business, 1duck Designs. He is always a great sport to help out whenever and however he can.

a.k.a. Kevin

Kevin is the true star of the farm. He is recognized almost everywhere he goes, but never minds the attention. He enjoys kissing the horses on their noses and takes his job of dog proofing the foals very seriously. Some of his favourite activities include seagull chasing, swimming, sleeping in, toy hoarding, and snuggling. We are just crazy about Dalmatians and we are head over heels for Kevin.

Linda is a Cardigan Welsh Corgi and she runs things on the farm! :-) She is always up for a good time, but also has an incredible work ethic - if we don't give her a job, she finds one for herself.
